Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.

 

YOUR ITINERARY

 

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL TO THE JUAN SANTAMARÍA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (SJO) IN SAN JOSE

Arrival to Costa Rica. Meet our representative at the Juan Santamaría International Airport and transfer to your hotel with a beautiful tropical garden. Free WiFi. (D)

 

DAY 2 - SAN GERARDO DE DOTA VALLEY

We meet for breakfast followed by a short introduction to Costa Rican nature by your trip leader, Sasha Vasiljev. We then depart to the highlands of the Talamanca Mountains. In the afternoon we take a walk through the lodge's nature trails in the cloud forest or engage in hummingbird photography. Free WiFi. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (B, L, D)

 

DAY 3 - CLOUD FOREST, CERRO DE LA MUERTE

After breakfast we take a picturesque hike though the mountain cloud forest to the waterfall. Upon return and lunch, we will spend the time on the lodge’s grounds photographing hummingbirds and exotic plants. For sunset photography we drive to the top of the Cerro de la Muerte, fourth highest mountain in Costa Rica at 11,322 ft (3451 m) above sea level.  A place with commanding views of the surrounding mountain massifs, where tropical alpine vegetation known as paramo prevails. DAY 4 - SAN GERARDO DE DOTA VALLEY, COTO BRUS VALLEY

Before breakfast we search of famous Resplendent Quetzal and enjoy hummingbird photography. More time on the lodge’s grounds photographing hummingbirds. After lunch we travel further south to our next destination - picturesque Coto Brus Valley, close to the Panamanian border. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 5 - PREMONTANE WET FOREST

We take a morning walk through a nature reserve, one of the last remaining pre-montane wet forests in the area. We begin our hike at the observation platform, towering over the treetops with views of surrounding hills, and a great place to spot many species of birds. We explore the path through the lush forest overgrown with palm trees, tree ferns, gingers and bromeliads. A highlight here is the rare site of the giant strangler fig tree with its hollow center. A compelling subject for any photographer. After lunch, we continue photo session through the garden's grounds. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 6 -COTO BRUS VALLEY, TROPICAL BEACH ESPADILLA ON THE PACIFIC COAST

After breakfast, we tour the botanical garden with its extensive palm tree, bromeliad and orchid collections. There are many visiting birds, as well as residents here including mix flocks of Tanagers, Crimson-fronted Parakeets, White-fronted Parrots, Caracaras, Chestnut-mandibled Toucans, Blue-crowned Motmots and more. After lunch we leave for an exotic tropical Espadilla beach on the Pacific Coast for sunset photography. Framed by lush tropical vegetation and beautiful rock formations, this beach is a perfect site! After the photography session we check-in at our lodge. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 7 - PACIFIC COAST, MANUEL ANTONIO NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, we depart for a visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. Troops of capuchin, howler and squirrel monkeys frequent the park, and there is a great chance to spot a three-toed or even a nocturnal two-toed sloth. Colorful rainbow land crabs, tree frogs and butterflies make great photographic subjects in this lush lowland tropical rainforest. Later that evening - show and tell meeting before dinner, to share our photography experiences and to brush up on photography techniques. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 8 - PACIFIC COAST, POAS VOLCANO, ARENAL

We depart for Poas Volcano National Park in the morning, stopping on our way at the bridge over Tarcoles River for some great shots of giant American crocodiles crowding the river. At the Poas Volcano National Park expect to get good use of your wide-angle lens for some incredible shots (weather permitting) of this active volcano’s smoking crater. After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant we then drive to our next destination near Arenal Volcano. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 9 - ARENAL NATIONAL PARK, LA FORTUNA TOWN

In the morning we visit Arenal National Park and hike to its viewpoint for breathtaking photography of the Arenal Volcano and the surrounding hills and the lake. In the afternoon we visit the town of La Fortuna to stroll through its many artesian shops. In the evening, at our lodge, unwind in the mineral hot springs pools. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 10 - LA FORTUNA WATERFALL, LOWLAND RAINFOREST

After breakfast we visit La Fortuna waterfall. A short trail takes us to the foot of this 300 ft (70 m) waterfall. It is a great place for long exposure shots of the falling water and the river surrounded by lush tropical forest. After lunch we leave for the lowland tropical rainforest on the Caribbean side of the country. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 11 - LOWLAND RAINFOREST NATURE WALK

In this forest we will find endless opportunities for photography. We start our hike on the grounds of the lodge early before breakfast, looking for emerald basilisk lizards and green iguanas, howler monkeys, and birds such as motmots, collared aracaris, keel-billed toucans, montezuma oropendalas and tiger herons. We will have great opportunities to photograph two species of poison dart frogs and red-eyed tree frogs. After breakfast, we continue with our walk. We will find many more subjects to photograph including birds, mammals and frogs. After lunch, more rainforest photography. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 12 - BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE PRIVATE RESERVE

This morning we will have some incredible opportunities to photograph the area's rich bird fauna. We will be able to take up close shots of many bird species, including collared aracaris, keel-billed and chestnut-mandibuled toucans, several species of tanagers, honecreepers, hummingbirds and much more at this garden, specially designed for photographers. Non-photographers can take a stroll through the lush tropical forest to the river. After lunch we depart to our hotel in the capital city of San José. The hotel has a beautiful tropical garden.  Three meals are included. Free WiFi. (B, L, D)

 

DAY 13 - DEPARTURE

Private transfer to the Juan Santamaría International Airport for your flight home. Free WiFi. (B)
